You may fight against other players registered teams in the arena. You fight the cpu controlling them and there are "seasons" that regularly roll over. Rewards are given out after a season based on how well you did and offer premium currency and standard currency in large amounts if you can do really well.

Monthly events are by far the best way of getting in game currency without spending money. You can get some from the single player missions, but it's a finite amount. To continue playing for free, you must be constantly active. In addition, certain popular character variants will pop up in loot boxes for limited times.
